2) What is the point?
a) The story of Brian Matlock
i) What does the church do?
ii) What is the church supposed to do?
iii) What is the purpose of the church?
b) Was the purpose of Jesus' dying for me just about me going to heaven?
i) Dallas Willard's comments:
(1) The bumper sticker gently imposes its little message: Christians Aren't Perfect, Just Forgiven.
(2) Just forgiven?
(3) And is that really all there is to being a Christian?
(4) The gift of eternal life comes down to that?
ii) So Jesus died JUST so I could go to heaven? NO!!!!
c) You were not just saved ''from'' something; you were saved ''for'' something.
d) What's that something?
i) To Build the Kingdom of Heaven!
ii) Gen 12
(1) Israel's mission was to allow God to bless all the world through them.
(2) They were blessed to be a blessing
iii) Jesus was the fulfillment of Israel
iv) Matthew 28
(1) He has now given us a purpose!
(2) Matthew 28:18-20 ''Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.''
(3) So... in conclusion!
v) It sounds like God is trying to build his own kingdom!
