Matthew 26:49-56
1) Welcome!
a) What a beautiful Easter weekend!
i) I want to challenge you think back to times gone by.
ii) Think back to when you were just a young child.
b) When we were young, we dreamed big dreams...
i) We imagined ourselves being some kind of superhero and we rehearsed over and over again how we were going to save the planet from some impending doom. In fact we used to practice the plan in our backyards (usually with a towel tied around our necks)
ii) Perhaps you imagined you were going to become an astronaut and walk on the moon.
iii) Or you were going to become the President of the US and serve for two terms.
iv) Or become a fighter pilot and become a highly celebrated ace.
v) Maybe we even imagined we were going to discover the cure for that disease that has been the scourge of all mankind.
c) In other words: WE HAD SUCH HIGH HOPES FOR OUR LIFE!
i) The reality of life is that life doesn't exactly tend to play out this way:
(1) We come to realize the ODDS stacked AGAINST us:
(a) Only a few ever get to become an astronaut
(b) You discover that in the history of the US, there have only been 44 people who have been President.
(c) You find out that people far smarter than you have been trying to solve those same diseases without success
(2) So:
(a) Our hopes ended up dashed
(b) Our dreams got squashed by reality
ii) WE DECIDE ONE DAY WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO EXPECT LESS FROM LIFE.
d) In other words... We lower our expectations for how it will be
i) We learn to HOPE FOR LESS
ii) Once this happen to us, it seems naïve to have ever had ''high hopes'' in the first place
iii) In fact, we can come to look on someone who lives with high hopes as ''foolish'' or ''ignorant'' or? ... certainly they are naïve
e) Please go ahead and pull out your bulletin and your Bible
i) If you are a regular attender and have your journal from ...
