Track star Wilma Rudolph won three gold medals in the 1960 Olympics. Wilma Rudolph literally opened the door and sent a message to the world about women and their ability in track and field. It was said that she was truly an athlete with grace, poise, and ability. She dazzled the spectators with her speed, and often time her challengers were left a respectable distance behind her. When she was in the tenth grade, she was seen by the track coach of Tennessee State, and he said, he saw her with a champion spirit.

Yes, she was a champion on the field, and in the Olympian life, a gold medalist three times, but she did not get their easy.

She was not carried in her mother's womb for nine months as most babies, she was a premature baby, only weighing 4.5 pounds and some 6 to eight weeks early. Because of that, it was believed that she would have some mental challenges and would have some issues. She developed pneumonia as a child, had infantile paralysis, and the Polio Virus. She contracted scarlet fever at 4, and with the fever and the paralysis, she lost the use of her left leg.

At seven she had to learn to walk again, she was fitted with braces, and corrected shoes that she had to wear, in hopes of being as normal as possible. She was the 20th child of 22 siblings, her daddy was a railway porter, and mother was a maid.

She had a big family but she had faced big challenges. Very little resources having such a large family, having so little to live on, but she declares that she had much to live for.

She said, the doctor told her and her family she would never walk again, but she said, her mother walked out of that doctor's office and looked her in the face and said, 'you will walk again''. She said, I decided to believe my mother!
