Psalm 103:1
We closed last week's sermon on ''How God Defines Blessing'' talking about the attitudes He blesses. In Matthew 5, it is called the Beattitudes. These are the ATTITUDES that characterize a blessed person in their BEing. As I studied these, I can see how these attitudes are so selfless. Yes, God wants us to take care of ourselves and be a good steward of the body He gave us. He knows we have lives to live and bills to pay. He understands our deepest personal needs and wants to meet every one of them. But our attitude should be God-centered. In these Jesus said YOU ARE BLESSED by being:
1. POOR IN SPIRIT. Your attitude is that you are not self-sufficient. You know your need for God.
2. THOSE WHO MOURN. You grieve over the loss of people. It hurts your heart to watch people perish. Again a selfless attitude.
3. MEEK - mild, patient people who don't need to aggressively pursue their own agenda and the things that they want in life and who don't need a quick fix will ultimately be the ones whose longevity will exceed that of the impatient, money hungry, self-ambitious.
4. THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS - those who are pursuing and desiring to be and stay in right standing with God, these are the ones that would enjoy the satisfaction of a clear conscience and the fulfillment of a heart that doesn't condemn them. They are less conscious of pleasing people and keeping people happy and more conscious of keeping their relationship with God right.
5. MERCIFUL - those that have compassion (they feel the pain of what others are going through) are other-centered and not self-centered - these are the people that will be shown mercy in their time of need.
6. PURE IN HEART - pure intentions, motivations. There are no innuendoes or subtle put-downs, no passive aggressive behaviors. These are the people that will see God. When my heart is not pure, it blurs my visio ...
