More Than You Can Handle (4 of 4)
Series: That's What He Said
Jeremy Jernigan
2 Corinthians 12
1) Intro
a) Last week of our series That's What He Said
b) Journals week 4
c) Turn in your Bibles to 2 Corinthians 12
d) Title: More Than You Can Handle
e) Today we will look at the statement Christians are fond of saying, ''God won't give you more than you can handle.''
2) We say this as an attempt at encouragement
a) Don't worry about this, you can handle it!
i) It's almost like we try to pep talk people into becoming Chuck Norris
ii) Picture - Chuck Norris
b) But what if we're encouraging something that's not true?
i) This ends up giving someone debilitating spiritual guilt
ii) The implied challenge is this: If God won't give you more than you can handle, you shouldn't be having such a hard time.
c) I shudder to think of someone saying this to:
i) My friend who suffers from extreme, often suicidal depression
ii) My multiple friends who have experienced miscarriages, often more than once
iii) People in our church community who have tragically lost all of their children in an accident
iv) People who struggle with their self-esteem after their spouse cheats on them
v) Friends who wake up each morning in fear of the unknown after financially losing everything
3) Here's the good news, this is actually the opposite of how God works!
a) More accurately, God will allow you to experience more than you can handle
b) Week 1 of the series we talked about Job's life
i) God is good and only good
ii) He does not give and take away
iii) He does not send us evil
iv) I encourage you to watch that online if you missed it
c) But God will often allow us to go through more than we can handle
i) Job
(1) We saw this in Job's life
(2) Job 10:18-19 ''Why then did you bring me out of the womb? I wish I had died before any eye saw me. If only I had never come into being, or had been carried straight from the womb to the grave!''
(3) Don't worry Job, God ...
