What does every parent want for their children?

1. Get older and get out of the house? Get a job? Get an education? Get married and have us some grandkids? Yes.
2. Are those things really what we want? All we want? No.
3. More than those things we want them grow up, mature, not simply get older.
a. We want them to grow as a person so that we can have some peace of mind when they leave home about how they will handle having a job, a spouse and children.
b. We want to see some sense of maturity so that we will know they can deal with life and all its twists and turns in a healthy and effective way.
4. No parent wants to have the kids who are healthy enough, capable enough and smart enough to make it on their own but refuse to grow up and leave because they are too lazy and immature to deal with life on their own.
5. While we want our children to be a success we are more concerned about what type of person they become.
6. While there are times we wish they could stay little forever we don't want them to remain children in their thinking and actions forever.

God, being the ultimate parent is very interested in our spiritual progress and maturity and does not want us to remain children in our faith, thinking and our actions forever. He wants us to grow-up.

At some point every parent has looked at their offspring and uttered these words, ''It's time to grow up.'' That's what they author of Hebrews is going to us today. He is going to tell to grow up and warn us of the dangers of spiritual immaturity and rebellion.

The writer wants to further demonstrate the superiority and sufficiency of Christ, this time as priest. By way of introduction to this new theme, Christ's sufficiency and superiority as High Priest, he introduces us to an OT character named Melchizedek, who we will look at in the weeks ahead.
