Hebrews 6:9-20


One of the most difficult things in the world to do is to give correction/offer a rebuke and receive correction or a rebuke. Discipline, corrective discipline, is not fun.

1. For the one offering the correction and administering the discipline whether it is to a child, an employee or friend our fear is always two-fold.
a. Worry they will hate us and that it will destroy our relationship with them.
b. Worry they will think we hate them and that we have no respect - concern - care for them.
2. For the one who receives the correction the fear is virtually the same.
a. We worry they hate us and that our relationship will never be the same.
b. We become very self-conscious around that person because we come to believe they think we are a bad person.
3. This is true regardless of what spirit in which the correction is offered. We get angry and feel horrible about ourselves --- no one likes to feel as if they have failed - nor do we like to have others point out those failures and shortcomings if we have failed.

This whole correction and discipline thing is not fun but it is necessary. For it to be effective and have a positive impact it must be...

1. Carried out well
2. Received well

In this section of Scripture we have been looking at the last couple of weeks - three counting this one - we have seen the apostle offer these struggling believers a rebuke. He doesn't hold back. He tells them in no uncertain terms...

1. Spiritually lazy. They no longer listened with open heart and mind. They were no longer make an effort to grow spiritually.
2. They had lost their spiritual appetite. They were not eating like adults but like children. Rather than a steak and potato they were popping open a can of Spaghetti O's.
3. Because of their laziness and bad spiritual eating habits they had not matured spiritually - they were lingering in spiritual infancy when they had plenty of ...
