The other day one of the channels that show old movies was running John Wayne movies all day long. They showed Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn, The Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit - some of my favorites. A few years ago they did a remake of True Grit. Some folks loved it. I didn't. I was appalled they would even attempt a remake of such a great western classic starring such an icon like John Wayne. There are some things you shouldn't mess with - The Duke is one of them.
Copies are never good as the original.
The quality of copies, remakes and spinoffs never seem to be as good as the original. They always seem to be lacking something. They just don't seem to satisfy. They leave you with the feeling that something is missing. Think about it like this...
1. There is a big difference between having a picture of a juicy cheeseburger and fries and an actual plate loaded with a juicy cheeseburger and fries.
2. There is a huge difference between looking at a picture of a pack of Oreos and a cold glass of milk and actually holding a package of Oreos and milk.
One is tantalizing and the other is filling. One makes you imagine and crave the enjoyment and satisfaction that you could have - the other one actually delivers. A picture may be worth a thousand words but it does not compare to the reality it represents. I may go overseas and carry a picture of my family but having that picture does not compare to actually having my family present.
The things of this world - this universe and created order - whether it be people or things and all that goes with them are all copies, pictures or reflections of a great and ultimate reality. The problem is that we too often settle for the copy or reflection rather than the ultimate reality that stands behind it.
