Have you ever asked yourself this question, ''Is this worth it?''

1. In the midst of going back to school for a mid-career and mid-life change - cost of tuition, time, demand on energy and reshuffling of schedules and priorities.
2. Decision to get healthy after years of unhealthy behavior and habits - exercise and new eating habits do not come easily or enjoyably.
3. Decided to confront an addiction or sinful habit that you have carried around for years - struggle is more than you bargained for so you ask, ''Is it worth it?''
4. You try to reconcile a marriage that has been slowly deteriorating because of neglect or hidden anger and the fireworks that follow make you ask - ''Is it worth it?''
5. Maybe you finally decided to let your Christian faith fully inform the way you live your practical life, how you approach life and it is harder than you thought - the rewards are not easily visible and do not come quickly - it seems to be costing you more than you thought and you wonder if it is all worth it.

This is where the believers to whom the book of Hebrews was written found themselves. Their new found faith in Christ had not turned out to be a worldly advantage. It was beginning to seem as if it was a disadvantage.

1. It did not increase their earning potential it greatly curbed it. It was not a boon for business but was an economic bust.
2. It did not help them climb the social ladder - it did not gain them social acceptance and vault them into the upper echelons of the social elite - instead it resembled a broken elevator that plummeted them to the basement of society's great social skyscraper.
3. It did not bring them safety and security - it put a target on them. Persecution was mounting. The threat of martyrdom was building with each passing day.

These people were asking themselves ''is it worth it?'' ''Is Jesus worth it?'' ''Is Christianity worthy it ...
