Hebrews 10:26-39
Endurance is one of those words I don't particularly care for. It's not because I do not believe it is a needed and admirable quality to have...it is. My problem with the word is what goes along with it. It is not a word that is needed when everything is great. You don't have to endure when everything is good.
1. No one tells a young couple when they are headed off on their honeymoon about the need for endurance. Endurance comes into play 15 years and 3 or 4 kids later, when things are more difficult.
2. You don't hear someone talk about the necessity of endurance when you just saddled up to a big buffet filled with country cooking and homemade desserts. Endurance is needed when you find yourself pulling up to a table day after day filled with rabbit food and strapping on your workout shoes in an effort to work off the effects of the buffet.
3. Endurance is not something you have to preach or encourage the ballplayer with when he is rounding the bases after a walk-off grand-slam. The message of endurance is needed in the weight-room, in the batting cage or on the practice field taking swing after swing and throw after throw.
Endurance is needed when things are difficult. Endurance is needed when you are tired and tempted to quit. Endurance is needed when expectations and reality are at odds and reality is winning the battle.
Endurance is needed when we are in the pursuit of something valuable. Endurance is needed when the reward is worthy the struggle - pain - frustration and energy. No one is encouraged to endure when there is nothing to be gained or benefited from the effort.
Endurance, perseverance, is a needed part of the Christian faith. That statement right there - based on what we have just said means...
1. Christian faith can be very difficult - it is not easy.
2. Christian faith is worth the struggle - the reward is worth it - the endurance and persev ...
