Legend has it that a secret society used to hold their meetings in the dead of night in a grave yard because the dead knew how to keep a secret - hence the saying, ''Dead men tell no tales.'' That statement while partially true is not completely true. While dead men may not tell your secrets they are not silent. They do speak. They have something to say to anyone who will listen.

James Moffat: Death is never the last word in the life of a man. When a man leaves this world - whether he is righteous or unrighteous - he leaves something in this world. He may leave something that will grow and spread like cancer or poison, or he may leave something like the fragrance of perfume or a blossom of beauty that permeates the atmosphere with blessing.

What we say after we are dead and gone will depend on how we lived while we were here.

Today, as we continue our journey through Hebrews 11, we will be listening to the voices of dead people - dead people who had been made alive by faith in a forward look to the coming Christ - people who though they are no longer here still speak and their words/example is not a poison but a pleasing fragrance of faith.

1. They left behind an example we would do well to imitate - the example of a people who pleased and honored God with their lives. They left behind a legacy of faith.
2. A key verse for this chapter and really for the book is Hebrews 11.6, ''without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and is a rewarder of those who seek Him.''

Faith is a key component in the life of a believer - it plays a part in salvation, living the Christian life and looking ahead to eternity. Faith is an important ingredient in the recipe for standing strong against doubt, struggles and persecutions.
