Hebrews 11:17-40
Some ideas and concepts are hard to grasp. They are abstract. They are difficult to explain and hard to visualize. You can't package them into concise definitions. A catchy phrase does not capture the fullness of their meaning.
For ideas like these we need some extra help. We need pictures. We need something we can visualize.
1. I have helped my brother do some work on Mom and Dad's house. He is very good at things like that and I am not. He'll start talking and trying to explain to me how the new deck or addition to the house is going to look or fit and then he waits to see if I get it - which I never do.
2. I know that he knows what he is talking about but I don't have a clue. The thing to do is draw me a picture - give me something tangible that my eyes can see because maybe then my brain can process it.
Faith is one of those concepts that is not easy to define, explain or grasp. There is nothing very abstract about this thing called faith. Faith, while it may not be easy to define, is something that we recognize when we see it in action.
As believers, faith is a very important part of our lives, of our relationship with God. Without faith we cannot please God. you cannot come to Him apart from faith. You cannot live a life that pleases Him without faith.
Here in Hebrews 11 we find a description a faith, not a full-blown definition, not sure you can do that, and several pictures of faith. He tells us what faith is and then sketches out some word pictures from the lives of men and women of great faith so we can see faith in action and better understand what it is and the place it has in our lives...
As we finish out this chapter we are going to see example after example of people who walked by and lived by faith. We will see the difference it made in their lives.
1. As we look at the examples we need to remember - not one of them had a perfect faith ...
