Hebrews 12:1-3
I preached a message from these verses back in March of this year. The sermon was a standalone and was not part of a series. Although I preached this passage just a few months ago I did not want to skip over these verses. They are important to our study of Hebrews and are a great set of verses with some rich meaning and important application for our lives.
I will try and refrain from preaching the same sermon but the meaning of the text is the same.
Hebrews 12.1-3 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
As we looked at chapter 11 over the last few weeks it was kind of like a top 20 countdown of the OT's greatest stories or heroes. It was person after person who exemplified faith in their life. This life of faith was not something just for those OT heroes and heroines. It was for the people to whom the letter of Hebrews was written.
1. Chapter 11 was not intended to be a nice trip down memory lane or to serve as positive and encouraging bedtime stories. Those stories were not simply shared and brought to mind to entertain and serve as a diversion.
2. Those stories were intended to teach and a lesson and to connect with the lives of these struggling believers.
3. Their purpose for us today all these years later is the same as well. They are to connect with our lives and help us live a life of faith.
As we look at these verses we are reminded that....
WE ALL HAVE A RACE TO RUN
