Hebrews 13:1-17
One of the first questions we learn to ask as children is why? It is a question that we never really let go of. Through the years the question morphs into different forms. Now instead of 'why' we say or think things like, 'so what?' 'Why does this matter?' 'Why is this important?' ''What difference does it make?'' or the more sophisticated ''what kind of impact does this have on my life?'
If you have ever heard a good sales pitch for some product whether we are talking about kitchen appliances, new tech gadgets or an automobile they all try to convince you of the products quality but also how it will impact, improve and bring ease and comfort to your daily routine.
We all want to know what difference something will make.
Do you remember sitting in math class thinking, as you listened to your teacher passionately demonstrate how to work some complex algebraic equation, ''when am I ever going to use this? Is it really going to impact my life one way or the other if I learn this or not?''
The author of Hebrews has been passionately presenting the superiority of Christ in every way imaginable to this church. For the better part of 11 chapters he has extolled the importance of faith in Christ. No specific commands have been given. Now in chapter 13 all of that changes. He gives these believers some specific commands regarding certain areas of their lives, areas in which a personal relationship with Christ makes a difference.
Jesus Christ makes a difference in how we approach and how we live life.
