i) Welcome to everyone!
(1) All five of our campuses
ii) It's great to be back!
(1) Every Summer in addition to my vacation I take a study leave
(2) As you can imagine, I anticipate its coming
(3) What you might not realize--I anticipate its ending
(a) There's no place like home!
(b) Missing you all
(c) Thanks to Jeremy who carried the lion's share of the teaching load!
b) Question I get asked: Why do you take a study leave every summer?
i) Answer: This is our church's best shot at avoiding pastoral burnout/flameout
(1) We agree
(a) The Elders who oversee this ministry
(b) Me who is tasked with keeping it headed the right direction
(2) Stats are extremely disturbing''
(a) 45% of pastors say that they've experienced depression or burnout to the extent that they needed to take a leave of absence from ministry.
(b) 52% of pastors say they and their spouses believe that being in pastoral ministry is hazardous to their family's well-being and health
(c) 75% report severe stress causing anguish, worry, bewilderment, anger, depression, fear, and alienation.
(d) 90% feel unqualified or poorly prepared for ministry.
(e) 1500 pastors a month leave the ministry
(3) I am now in my 28th year at Central, 37th year overall
(a) I am just as excited now as was when I started.
(b) That's why I take time every summer!
(4) What do I do?
(a) Vacation
(b) Travel-see what God's up to in other places
(c) Read...a LOT
(d) Evaluate where we are
(e) Listen to God as he speaks to me
(f) Prepare for where I believe God wants to take us
ii) Things change
(1) This church is growing and as it does, it changes.
(2) You don't notice change in your family when you're always together
(3) Things just tend to happen slowly:
(a) You grow slowly
(b) You fade slowly
(i) You put on a little weight
