In today's massive market place of ideas what we have been discussing over the last few weeks has been rather benign. Most people in our culture today are happy to agree that God exists. When the subject is broached in a university setting you may set off a lively and spirited debate but when you begin moving to discussions concerning the trustworthiness and authority of the Bible, the person of Jesus Christ eyebrows are raised and you find that you have come to the outer-edge of a tempestuous storm.
At this point you are not just talking about the existence of some distant deity but the God of the Christian faith.
William Lane Craig spoke at a major Canadian University on the existence of God. He said after his presentation one slightly irate co-ed wrote on her comment card, 'I was with you until you got to the stuff about Jesus. God is NOT the Christian God.' Craig goes on to say, Most people are comfortable and even happy to admit that God exists; but in our pluralistic society it has become politically incorrect to claim that God has revealed Himself decisively in Jesus.
If you want to move from the outer edge of the storm and into the very heart of the storm then begin talking about Jesus Christ not merely as God's most decisive revelation of Himself but as the only way to eternal life.
Things hit critical-mass when you come to Jesus' statement in John 14.6 when He says, 'I am the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through me' and Peter's sermon in Acts 4.12 where we are told 'There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.'
It is the height of intolerance today to claim that Jesus Christ is the only way. To suggest that our neighbor Joe, who is a good guy, donates his time to habitat for humanity, coaches the best little league team, serves at a soup kitchen every hol ...
