Big Idea: The best time to avert a tragedy is before you arrive at the scene of one.


1) Introduction:

2) The Ballad of a Tragedy

a) Quite a while back... when I was in high school, there was a singer by the name of John Denver.
i) Show picture of John Denver
ii) His music was a cross between country, soft rock and folk.
iii) He was kind of like Taylor Swift, in that no one seems to admit to liking his music but he sold millions of records so there must have been a lot of closet John Denver fans!
iv) My wife Lisa was one of them. I've heard a lot of his music over the years.
v) I bring him up because I want to tell you how he died.
vi) He made a few bad decisions that led to his death.
vii) You see, he died when he crashed his plane into the ocean.
viii) Here's the summation of what went wrong

b) The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause of this accident was the pilot's diversion of attention from the operation of the airplane and his inadvertent application of right rudder that resulted in the loss of airplane control while attempting to manipulate the fuel selector handle. Also, the Board determines that the pilot's inadequate preflight planning and preparations, specifically his failure to refuel the airplane, was causal. The Board determines that the builder's decision to locate the unmarked fuel selector handle in a hard-to-access position, unmarked fuel quantity sight gauge ...
