1) Introduction:

a) Welcome and Greeting

b) I want to begin today by telling you a true-but very scary-story that happened many years ago, on a very dark night, in a long ago forgotten graveyard.
i) Is this a set up for a spooky Halloween story or what?
ii) Really! It happened like this...
iii) My story of graves, snakes, pumpkins and panic.

c) When is a time YOU remember being really afraid?

d) What happens to us physically when we are afraid?
i) Fight
ii) Flight

e) Let's pull out:
i) Bibles: Joshua 1
ii) Journals:
(1) Week Two
(2) Title: The Battle Begins
(3) Big Idea: Courage is not the absence of fear; courage is the willingness to engage with that which terrifies you.

2) The Story

a) We've scoped out the land
i) 12 spies
ii) 40 years

b) Now Moses dies

i) Joshua 1:1a ''After the death of Moses...''

ii) This a very significant problem
(1) For 40 years Moses has been their go-to guy
(2) He's represented and spoken for God (to the people)
(3) He's represented and spoken for the people (to God)
(4) He's been the vision caster, the strategist, the spokesman, the leader, the rock.

iii) And now he's dead
(1) Do you think this frightened the people??
(2) Do you imagine this left them disoriented?
(3) Are we going back to Egypt now?
(4) Are we staying in this desolate desert?

c) What exactly do we do now?

i) Joshua 1:1-3 ''After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: 'Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them-to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.''
