1 Peter 5:8
1) How good are you at listening?
a) This is a part time job of every parent
b) My kids are at the age where they don't simply respond when I talk to them (which is every age)
i) I find that I often say something consecutively 2 or 3 times without a break
ii) I've also tried clapping my hands while I speak to them
iii) So far the results are pretty mediocre...
c) We don't tend to outgrow this habit as we get older
d) [Story of eating spicy foods]
e) We are going to look at someone who knew how to listen well, but before we do I need to set the stage with a little theology
2) If you think critically about God and the world you inevitably have to make sense out of evil
a) Where does it come from and what is God's role in it if He is all powerful?
i) 1 Peter 5:8 ''Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.''
ii) Colossians 1:17 ''For in [Jesus] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.''
iii) [Illustration of releasing a ball vs. throwing a ball] (Use a full body camera shot)
iv) Think of the devil as gravity
v) When God opens His hand gravity does what it wants to do all along
b) What we see in this week's story is God ''releasing the ball''
c) In this case the ball is Israel
3) Today we are looking at one of my favorite stories of a guy named Hezekiah
a) He forever changed my view of prayer
i) I want to show you 2 key prayers he prayed and what we can learn from them today
ii) I would argue that Hezekiah knew how to listen well to what he saw and heard
b) Journals week 4
c) Title: The Beginning of the End
d) Open your Bibles to 2 Kings 19
