1) Welcome to Central!
2) Let me talk to the fellas for a second
a) When is the last time you built something that came with instructions?
b) Most of the time we don't use them
c) My friend told me about instructions he had that said ''Please be sure to take frequent breaks to keep from becoming frustrated.''
d) On the rare occasion you do give them a glance, how long does it take until you realize that the directions are wrong?
3) Today we are in chapter 13 of The Story
a) Week 1 of our new journals
b) Big idea: Real wisdom is following the instructions, not knowing them.
c) We are looking at the life of King Solomon
d) He actually wrote about this
i) Proverbs 14:12 ''There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.''
ii) Proverbs 16:25 ''There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.''
iii) That's two for one in case you missed it!
iv) Solomon is quite qualified to draw this conclusion
e) Last week we wrapped up our look at King David's life
i) We saw the highs and the lows
ii) Solomon is David's son that becomes king after David dies
iii) Interestingly, Solomon is also a child of David and Bathsheba
iv) We talked about them last weekend and what a major moment that was in David's life
f) Open your Bibles to 1 Kings 4
4) Solomon is a man for Americans
a) He pursued it all and had it all
i) We see an incredible example of this if we read carefully
ii) 1 Kings 10:22 ''The king had a fleet of trading ships at sea along with the ships of Hiram. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.''
b) I remember talking with a guy about his marriage
i) Things weren't going well
ii) He told me that if they didn't get better in 6 months he was going to get a divorce
iii) The 6 months part stood out to me
iv) I asked him why 6 months?
