Overcoming Depression (9 of 11)
Series: Standing for the Truth

I Kings 19:9:18

When we are discouraged more than anything else we need
to sense the presence of God in our life so we know he cares.
We can experience the presence of God in different ways:
1. By reading the Bible - focusing on God's character.
2. By singing or reading the words of a hymn or song.
3. By praying and asking for help.
4. By reading a Christian book.
5. By the encouragement of fellow believers.
Prov. 12:25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down,
but a good word makes him glad.

We can become discouraged when we focus on our circumstances.
Remember that your circumstances will change as time moves on.
To overcome discouragement - focus on the character of God.

DEPRESSED OVER CIRCUMSTANCES :9-10
When Elijah arrived at Mount Horeb, also called Mount Sinai,
he found a cave and spent the night there. There is a cave about two-thirds up the mountain called ''Elijah's cave.'' Some believe that this may have been the same cave where God placed Moses 800 years earlier as his glory passed by (Exodus 33:21-23).

The Lord asks Elijah, ''What are you doing here?'' God had told
him to go to Samaria to confront King Ahab ((17:1), to go the brook Cherith (17:3), to go Zarephath (17:9) and Mount Carmel (18:19). But God had not sent him here to Mount Horeb.

:10 A superficial answer could have been, ''I am here because I am afraid for my life because of Jezebel.'' Instead, he gives an honest
answer that he doesn't feel appreciated and feels sorry for himself.

Jealous (NIV zealous) - Heb. deep commitment.
Elijah means he has been very committed to serve Yahweh.
1. He had stood alone for God by confronting the idolatry
of Baal which was promoted by Ahab and Jezebel.

2. He had challenged the people who had broken their covenant with God by worshipping Baal and tearing down his altars to turn back to him again and to kill the false prophets.
