Divine Retribution (11 of 11)
Series: Standing for the Truth
Stephen Whitney
I Kings 21: 17-23
God knows everything that takes place so even though people think they get away with something they have not fooled him.
Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
keeping watch on the evil and the good.
He blesses those who keep his laws and punishes those who don't.
People may get away with their sin for a while, but eventually God calls them to account and will punish them because he is just.
Psalm 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of
your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
American theologian William Shedd (d. 1894) - ''God cannot lay down a law, affix a penalty, and threaten inflict in and proceed no further, in case of disobedience. The divine truth forbids this.''
In other words, justice demands the punishment of the sinner.
God is just and therefore justly punishes the sinner.
GOD'S JUDGMENT I Kings 21:17-23
Ahab :17-19
The Lord knew that Jezebel had Naboth killed so Ahab could take
possession of his vineyard so he calls Elijah to confront Ahab.
God knows everything we do, there is nothing hidden from him.
Psalm 139:2-3 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path
and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
Spurgeon - ''You are familiar with all I do; nothing is concealed from thee, nor surprising to thee, nor misunderstood by thee.''
:19 Ahab was guilty of two sins: the death of Naboth because his covetousness was the cause of it and taking possession of the property which showed he agreed with what had been done.
He took advantage of the death of an innocent man.
God is angry at anything that violates his laws and because he is holy and just he must punish sin. Shorter Westminster Confession (1646) - Question 84 ''Every sin deserves God's wrath and curse.''
