1) Happy father’s day!
a) Today I want to share perspective from living the craziness of four young kids
i) Our kids are 5, 4, 2, and 5 months
ii) But especially some of the things I’ve learned in becoming a foster dad for our little baby
b) Journals week 5
c) Message title: How to Love a Rattlesnake
d) Don’t misunderstand me on this
i) I’m not saying that kids are rattlesnakes
ii) I’m saying that parenting is a rattlesnake
(1) I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been peed on or thrown up on
(2) How many times I’ve been woken up in the middle of the night
(3) How many naps I wished for but never had
(4) How many of my things have been broken by their little fingers
(5) Or how many times we were wrestling and they chose to kick daddy in a certain area while I was defenseless
(6) And that’s just this week!
iii) When you decide to start a family you choose to love a rattlesnake
2) There is nothing else in the world like parenting
a) I often tell new parents that it’s better than anything they can imagine
b) And it’s harder than anything they can imagine
c) Parenting is living out the Gospel
i) Putting others first
ii) Dying to yourself
d) This is why the rattlesnake metaphor works
e) And it compounds the more kids you have
i) You get to see the multiple varieties of personalities you are capable of making
ii) Story of Madsen last week
(1) Our 4 year old (number 2 of 4)
(2) Comes downstairs at 11:30pm. He can't sleep. Grabs a magnetic writing board and goes back to his room.
(3) I go to check in him at 12:30am. I stare at his bed waiting for my eyes to adjust. Suddenly I hear (from the dark) "What are you doing." He's sitting up and drawing in the dark. Tells me he's drawing me.
(4) He's fully awake. As I leave he instructs me to remember to keep his door cracked.
