2) One Amazing Story

a) 1 Kings 18

i) The setting
(1) Elijah prayed that there would be no rain
(2) There has been no rain
(3) Ahab is extremely irritated at Elijah
(4) Actually, he wants to kill him!

ii) The story
(1) 1 Kings 18:1

b) How cool is that?

i) Most of us hear a story like that and we are ''wow!''

ii) Wouldn't that be cool!
(1) Very quickly then, we further think that something like this would never happen in our lives
(2) Again... we think this was God in his hey-day.

c) Some realities:

i) Truth be known... We do believe in prayer

(1) According to Gallup polls:
(a) More Americans will pray this week that will exercise, drive a car, have sex, or go to work.
(b) Nine in ten of us pray regularly, three out of four claim to pray every day.

(2) Eight in ten Americans believe that miracles can happened today, and more than half of all doctors report observing miracles in their patients that defy medical explanation.

ii) Yet we hear stories of people who are giants of prayer and we just don't feel qualified to be in the same room.
(1) George Mueller spent several hours in prayer every day on behalf of his orphanage.
(2) Lancelot Andrewes spent five hours a day in prayer.
