a) Gifts: Christmas for Generations
i) It's Christmas time!
(1) It's hard to believe it's here again!
(2) How quickly it comes...how quickly it goes!
ii) No doubt when you think about Christmas... you think about it in different time dimensions
(1) You think about Christmases past ... when you were a child (you probably have pleasant thoughts)
(2) You think about the present year of Christmas (often these thoughts are anxious thoughts)
(3) You think about what the future holds ... Christmas seen through the eyes of your children (and their children) (these tend to be hopeful thoughts)
iii) It was no random thought that Dickens hit on in ''A Christmas Carol'' when he wrote of these three time dimensions of Christmas.
b) Key Verse for understanding Christmas:
i) Galatians 4:4a ''But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son...''
ii) Something you must understand: THE FIRST CHRISTMAS DIDN'T JUST STAND ALONE AS A SINGLE EVENT THAT JUST ''HAPPENED'' ONE NIGHT
iii) The first Christmas always has to be put into a time context
iv) Christmas is a STORY that has be understood against a history... and measured with the future in mind.
v) For many of us... we don't understand the deeper story...
c) The story of Christmas is the story of how God has worked through the ages
i) When Matthew set out to tell us the Christmas story, he began it with these words.
ii) Matthew 1:1 ''This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham...''
(1) This verse is LOADED!!!!
(2) Earlier in the story we had the calling ...
