2) Gates are a common structure in all of the world
a) By definition: ''a movable barrier, closing an opening in a fence, wall, or other enclosure; any means of access or entrance.''
b) They can have an unlimited amount of variations in the design
i) Gates for houses (picture - house gate)
ii) Gates for castles (picture - castle gate)
iii) Gates for cities (picture - Brandenburg gate)
(1) This is called the Brandenburg Gate
(2) This used to be one of the ways you would enter Berlin
iv) Gates for babies (picture - baby gate)
c) But they all serve the same purpose: a means of access or entrance
i) The effects of a gate are twofold:
(1) It's protection
(2) It's also inclusion
ii) Gates also teach us an important concept
d) Big idea: The way you enter determines the way you're treated.
i) Think about inviting people over to your house
(1) If a person comes in through your front door, the odds are that you invited them
(2) If they came in through a window, odds are that they are breaking in unwanted
(3) Of course, if you have teenage kids than this theory falls apart
ii) Or think about emails that you get
(1) I bet you respond very differently to a spam email than to an email from a friend
(2) Both of them have your email address but one of them got it in a way that you didn't want
iii) Story of being onstage at the Underoath concert
(1) Picture - Underoath
(2) I got to stand on stage while they played
(3) If I didn't have a ticket for this I would have promptly been escorted out
iv) The way you enter determines the way you're treated.
