John 10:11-16
1) Welcome to Central
a) We are in week 5 of our summer series 1x8
b) Hopefully you were handed a new journal today
c) Title: The Good Shepherd
2) Last week we saw Jesus say He is the gate
a) This is a role the shepherd would play for his sheep
b) Once we've entered the gate we experience the shepherd
c) John 10:11-16 ''I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 ''I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.''
3) This is an interesting image for Jesus to pick as shepherds have a long and complicated history
a) The first murder in history was a farmer killing a shepherd
i) Cain kills his brother Abel
ii) WRITE: Cain/Abel
iii) Genesis 4:2b ''Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.''
b) It seems there has always been a tension between farmers and shepherds
i) They are both competing for the same space
ii) But for different uses
iii) Both are mutually exclusive to the other
4) This is magnified when Joseph is sold into slavery in Egypt

b) He rises in rank
c) His brothers eventually come and live with the Egyptians
d) But this presents a clash of lifestyles
i) The Egyptians were farmers but Joseph's brothers were shepherds
