2) Today's ''I Am'' statement was actually said twice by Jesus in the Gospel of John
a) John 8:12 ''When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ''I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.''
i) The timing of this statement is very strategic
ii) It comes on the heels of the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles
(1) It was a 7 day feast celebration
(2) Each night of the feast except on Sabbath, the worshipers awaited the signal of the special lighting of the golden lamps
(3) The lamps were intended to remind worshipers of God's leading the people of Israel through the wilderness at night by a pillar of fire
(4) Exodus 13:21-22 ''By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.''
iii) Jesus is showing that He is the God they are all remembering and celebrating together that week
b) John 9:5 ''While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.''
3) Consider how significant light is to our lives

b) If we get too much or too little it has dramatic effects on us
