d) The image of a vine would be a common one for the New Testament audience
i) It would be like talking to us about cactuses
ii) Picture - Vine
iii) Grapevines and vineyards were some of the most important products of the Jews
iv) Vines take a lot of work to keep them healthy
e) In the Old Testament the vine is frequently used as a symbol for Israel
i) Psalm 80:8-9 ''You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.''
ii) It is usually employed as a symbol of a disobedient Israel
iii) In the Old Testament texts, therefore, if Israel is the vine or the vineyard, then God is viewed as the gardener

2) John 15:1-4 ''I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.''
a) Unlike the other ''I am'' statements of Jesus, this one refers to both Jesus and the Father
b) Jesus turns a common image on its head
i) In this metaphorical description the Father is still portrayed as the gardener
ii) But Jesus is the Vine, not Israel
iii) And the disciples are pictured as branches
c) Big idea: The closer you get to Jesus the more vibrant you'll experience life.
