The Essence of Pentecost
Rex Yancey
Acts 2:1-8
At Bethlehem, a young maiden named Mary, gave birth to a baby boy. His name was Jesus. The Son of God was born. Oh, the difference a day can make. Jesus died on Calvary. Oh, what a difference a day can make. Jesus resurrected from the dead. What a difference a day can make. He ascended into heaven. What a difference a day can make. Pentecost, oh what a difference a day can make.
Many Christians have gone to Calvary for pardon. But not enough of them have gone to Pentecost for power. Bethlehem is God with us. Calvary is God for us. Pentecost is God in us.
On this wonderful day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit of God came down to indwell believers.
The church was formed and spiritual power was made possible to live the Christian life and to obey the command of the Lord to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.
We don't need Pentecost imitations or substitutes. We don't need to generate the power on our own. We have our programs and paraphernalia, our pep rallies and personalities. We do everything we know to do to imitate the power of the Holy Spirit. But, ''All is vain unless the Spirit of God comes down.''
Leonardo Da Vinci decided he would recreate Pentecost. So he put costumes on some actors and made them apostles. He put up a set to make it look like the day of Pentecost. He had wind blowing through the doors. He had fire falling from the roof. Some of the fire caught the drapes on fire, some of the apostles were scorched, and he nearly burned the building down.
We do not need cheap imitations or substitutes. We do not need wind of our own devising or fire of our own creation. What we need is the power of the Holy Spirit that was made available on the day of Pentecost.
