When the Glory Fades
Dr. Ernest L. Easley
2 Corinthians 3.1-18; Exodus 34
Now as you're turning to the New Testament book of second Corinthians, how many of you grew up watching that masked man, The Lone Ranger and his Indian companion Tonto? Every episode began with the Lone Ranger on his horse Silver, rearing up on his hind legs with the Lone Ranger saying, ''Hi-yo Silver.'' And off they would ride to rescue someone in trouble!
One day the Lone Ranger and Tonto were riding along and suddenly up ahead saw dozens of Indians with war paint on their faces approaching from the North. The Lone Ranger said, ''Tonto, we must head south now if we're going to live.''
So the Lone Ranger and Tonto turned their horses around and headed south. A few minutes later they looked up and saw Indians with war paint on their faces approaching from the South. The Lone Ranger said, ''Tonto, let must head East in order to live.'' So they headed East.
In a little while, they looked up and saw Indians with war paint on their faces approaching from the East. The Lone Ranger said, ''Tonto, we must head West in order to live.'' So they headed West.
Well, in a while they looked up and saw Indians approaching from the West with war paint on their faces. The Lone Ranger looked at Tonto and said, ''Tonto, my faithful friend, it appears that we're now surrounded by Indians and we shall soon die.''
Tonto looked at the Lone Ranger and said, ''Ug. What you mean ''we'' pale face?''
He just thought he had a faithful companion!! And then there were the cape-crusaders: Batman and Robin. They too wore masks. Zoro wore a mask. Spiderman wore a mask! Darth Vader wore a mask! There was even a movie entitled ''The Mask'' with Jim Carrey.
Now let me ask you a question: why all the masks? Why do you suppose they wore masks? What's the purpose in wearing a mask? To cover something up! Right? To cover up reality! You can put it down: People who wear a mask have something to hide!
