1) So great to be back
a) Before I begin- I must offer TWO CAVEATS
i) Because I have so much material to cover: I am going to move through this very quickly!!!
(1) Buckle up and Hang on!!!
ii) Because this material is so important: I am going to choose to stick much closer to my notes than I normally do! By doing this, I will stand less chance of goofing it up! (Pray for me... I'll being doing this message 5 times this weekend!)
b) I love this church!
c) I miss it dearly when I am gone
i) Nobody knows for sure who first coined the phrase ''Absence makes the heart grow fonder'', but whoever it was, was right about this.
ii) I love coming home!
2) What's Up with this Annual Study Break?
a) For some of you... you are asking yourself just who is this guy?
i) You're new to Central and you've never seen me
ii) For others, you know the summer drill by heart
b) If you're new to Central, let me bring you up to speed.
i) Who I am
ii) I'm just returning from a summer break
c) One of the biggest problems in the church nationally-PASTORS WHO ARE BURNED OUT
i) Pastors who are not THRIVING, rather they are simply SURVIVING.
ii) The Elders of the church have determined WE WANT NONE OF THAT!
iii) Our church's STUDY LEAVE program
(1) Every 7 years our staff can apply to be gone for 3-6 months
(2) I don't do this... but I do take a month a year to fit this in.
d) I get asked frequently: What do you do when you're gone???
i) This is a time to REFLECT and RECALIBRATE
ii) A time to think
iii) A time to assess
(1) How my life is going
(a) What's good?
(b) What's not?
(c) Where do I need to grow?
(d) How am I going to get that done?
(2) How this church's life is going
(a) What's good?
(b) What's not?
(c) Where do we need to grow?
(d) How are we going to get that done?
e) You could say: It's a chance to work ON the church, more than IN the church
