Movement Five: Redeeming - Part Two (5 of 5)
Series: Christmas Symphony
Jeremy Jernigan
John 1:1-14

1) Recap of Symphony series
a) 5 movements of the story of God
i) Creating - God created ... put us on a perfectly tuned planet
ii) Scattering - sin ruined it all... put us ''out of tune''
iii) Gathering - God is determined to get us back, to restore us
iv) Redeeming - this is really the story of Christmas
b) The story isn't that obvious to us though
c) Listening/hearing is harder than you might imagine
i) Ringtones for students
ii) ''Do you hear what I hear'' song

2) Getting the noise out of music (in the lifetimes of the people in this room)
a) The invention of the record player... the LP
i) The advantage: Gave you a reliable reproduction, portable... it could come to you, you didn't have to go to the orchestra
ii) The disadvantage: Where do we begin?
(1) Play recording of LP
(2) They scratched, they warped, they were bulky, they would ''wear out''
b) The invention of the Eight Track
i) Donny and Marie?
ii) The advantages: Gave a reliable reproduction and added greater portability, still bulky
iii) The disadvantage: The ''click'' as the cartridge changed tracks. It would actually go quiet in the middle of a song, then click, then silence, then back to the music
c) The invention of the cassette
i) We actually got this from a Lutheran thrift store
ii) The advantages: Size, music quality, more of them could be carted around with you.
iii) The disadvantage: The tape would tangle (think putting a pencil in the wheels), the tape would actually stretch and then distort. Extreme heat would even warp the casing.
d) The invention of the CD
i) The advantages: Consistent sound quality; even greater portability
ii) The disadvantages: They can scratch, skip, or take on finger prints... or even warp... all will distort and ruin the sound
e) The invention of the MP3
i) The advantages: Can be carried on your phone! Even more consistent sound ...
