Luke 23:1-7
1) Intro
a) Week 8 in your journals
i) Title: Thorns of Truth
ii) Luke 23
iii) Big idea: Seeing the truth demands seeing past the crowd.
b) Let me define what I mean by the crowd
i) In essence, I'm referring to groupthink
(1) Groupthink is a term coined by social psychologist Irving Janis
(2) It's a psychological phenomenon... in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome.
(3) A group is especially vulnerable to groupthink when its members are similar in background, when the group is insulated from outside opinions, and when there are no clear rules for decision making.
ii) When what is popular becomes what is right
iii) When we stop asking the hard questions for fear of what may happen
iv) The crowd is the group that pressures you into what is collectively acceptable
c) This is different than Christian community
i) Christian community is a small group of people that know you and are following God alongside side of you
ii) They will willingly tell you the truth regardless if it's popular
2) The Asch Experiment
a) In 1951, Solomon Asch conducted a pivotal experiment
b) It continues to be repeated today
