2) Getting Going
a) Two Questions:
i) What is the number one cause of death in the United States? (Heart Disease)
ii) How do you know when you have a heart problem?
(1) This is what we want to talk about today
b) Two Verses:
i) Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
ii) 1 Chronicles 28:9b “…for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.”
c) Pull out:
i) Your Bible
(1) Open to Luke Chapter 11
ii) Your Journal
(1) Week 2: Hard Words to Hard Hearts
(2) Big Idea: Godliness, first and foremost, is a matter of the heart.
3) The setting
a) Luke 11:37-38 “When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.
b) When Jesus had finished speaking…
i) Ties this section directly into the previous one
ii) Where have we been?
(1) We’ve been driving out a demon
(2) Jesus has been accused of serving Satan
(3) People clamored for a sign
(4) Only one sign to be given
(5) Jesus chastises them on their unwillingness to believe
c) So Jesus gets an invitation to dine with a Pharisee
i) This is a bit surprising
ii) This refers to “lunch”
(1) Jesus is “doing lunch” with this guy
(2) AND APPARENTLY QUITE A FEW OTHERS AS WELL
(3) What we don’t know was the MOTIVE of this invitation
(a) It quickly appears that it was some sort of a trap
d) Who were the Pharisee’s?
i) They were the uber-religious Jews
(1) They were “the separated ones”
(2) They were the ones who believed they had God “down”
(3) They had codified “true religion”
ii) In contrast to the two commands of Christ, the Pharisees had developed a system of 613 laws:
