Big Idea: Attention you direct toward yourself is attention diverted away from God.
1) Opening Comments:
a) Words of Greeting
b) This past week
i) Time in Amman, in Jordan
(1) A gathering of religious leaders in the Mid-East, mostly from around the Mid-East
(2) A gathering of Muslims, Jews and Christians
(3) Lovers of Jesus are in places you've probably never imagined!
(a) We talked to many Muslims about Jesus and they were amazingly open to the conversation.
(b) If I didn't see it with my own eyes!
ii) Time in Bethlehem, in Palestine
(1) Understanding and meeting with people regarding the Israel/Palestine conflict.
(2) There is more going on there than I had any idea about... and I can't get it out of my mind.
(3) I think I might have had one of the most significant experiences of my life.
(4) More to come on this!
iii) Ok... Let's get to work
2) Hey, Look At Me!
a) The issue of showing off
i) When's the last time you SHOWED OFF?
ii) Definition: ''Showing off''
(1) To exhibit or display so as to invite admiration
(2) To behave in such a manner as to make an impression
iii) Requirements for showing off: You need an audience, AND YOU NEED A GIG!
iv) As a kid:
(1) Think diving board
(2) Think bike
(3) One day on a hill
(a) ''Sledding'' on a cardboard sled
(b) Dared by my friends to go down this one particularly treacherous side...
(c) Cutting my foot open so badly I had to be carried home.
(4) Good thing SHOWING OFF is something that we all ''outgrow''
(a) Adults have no need to show off!
(b) Right?
v) As an adult:
(1) Do adults show off?
(a) Yes!
(b) Of course we do!
(2) Displaying our possessions
(a) Our car
(b) Our house
(c) Our ''collection'' of anything
(i) Coins or other collectibles
(ii) Civil War paraphernalia
(3) Strutting our achievements around
(a) Our title
(b) Our athletic accompli ...
