b) Looking closer:
i) Luke 18:35-37 ''As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, ''Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.''
(1) A problem we have to confront:
(a) This story is told in Matthew, Mark, and Luke
(b) Matthew says:
(i) There were two blind men
(ii) Jesus was ''leaving'' Jericho when this happened.
(c) Mark says
(i) Jesus was ''leaving'' also
(ii) Only one guy is mentioned
(iii) Mark gives his name, ''Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus''
(2) So what is it?
(a) Approaching or leaving?
(b) One guy or two???
(3) Something to consider:
(a) In the time of Jesus there were two Jericho's...
(i) The old one destroyed in the OT-
1. ''remember... Joshua fought the battle of Jericho!''
2. The walls came a tumbling down
(ii) The new one that as built by Herod the Great
1. Jericho was a popular and wealthy resort city not far from the Jordan River, about eighteen miles northeast of Jerusalem.
2. It was once called the ''City of Palms''
3. Call it the ''Palm Springs'' of the day!
4. They were about a mile apart
(iii) If this happened to take place between the two Jericho's, how would you describe it?
1. One might say Jesus was leaving
2. Another might say Jesus was approaching
(b) Could there have been two men but Bartimaeu ...
