b) No question: Big News Impacts Us!

c) Did you hear???

i) One of the realities of human is nature is a love for being the first to tell others news.
(1) Call it ''being concerned''
(2) Call it ''gossip''
(3) Call it getting ''the scoop''

ii) Nobody tries harder to tell others first than News Agencies do

iii) However in an attempt to get it out ''first'' they often get it ''wrong''
(1) A classic illustration from history:
(a) Dewey Defeats Truman!

(2) Yet even recently we've had elections ''called'' too early, only to have to be retracted

iv) Sometimes being in a hurry to ''break the news'' - facts aren't checked
(1) You'll remember the fate of Dan Rather
(2) Rather-Gate
(3) President George W. Bush
(a) Claimed derogatory he had derogatory information about Bush before he was President
(b) The problem was he didn't investigate his sources
(c) Cost Dan Rather his job
(4) When your name gets associated with something ''gate'' - you've pretty much blown it

v) Events like this cause credible news agencies to become MUCH MORE CAREFUL
(1) They still can get it wrong
(2) Whenever they do... they take a huge hit to their credibility

vi) We tend to distrust people who tell us ''truths'' that we find out to be ''lies''

d) The times in which we are living have been called the ''Information Age''

i) News travels faster now than ever.

ii) Aided by computers and wireless systems, we can be fully informed.

e) Interestingly and ironically, this has actually ushered us into the ''Misinformation Age''
