Luke 9:51-56

b) When you are following someone you better know what it will mean
c) To follow Jesus we have to ask, where is Jesus going?
3) Luke 9:51-56 ''As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, ''Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?'' 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.''
a) Jesus ''resolutely'' set out for Jerusalem
i) He's on the road
ii) Literally his ''face is set on Jerusalem''
iii) This sets the stage for the verses that follow
b) He is on a mission and brings intensity with him
i) I joke with my wife and my dad that they get too intense at times
ii) We call it mission mode
iii) I like to remind them: ''your intensity needs to match reality''
c) To follow Jesus we have to ask, where is Jesus going?
4) The Samaritans reject Him because he is headed for Jerusalem, not them
a) Verse 54 is shockingly inappropriate
i) How would followers of Jesus come so quickly to this conclusion?
(1) This is the ancient equivalent of nuking the enemy
(2) It is one people group angry at a different people group
ii) James and John probably already had prejudices against the Samaritans
(1) This was further evidence to justify what they felt
(2) Their intuitions led them to this conclusion and then their reason followed
(3) If they were walking to Samaria and would have passed a town of Israelites they p ...
