The Test of Obedience (2 of 14)
Series 1 John
Robert Dawson
1 John 2:3-6
Did you ever find yourself sitting in class at school looking out the window daydreaming while the teacher waxed eloquent about some important subject, like the quadratic equation, that was vitally important to your success in life and then in the middle of the lecture call your name and say, 'Robert, are you listening?' To which you responded, 'Oh, yes ma'am.' To which she would follow up and ask, 'Do you understand what we are talking about?' To which you would again respond 'yes ma'am I've got it.' Not realizing that she has ways of finding out if you were really listening and paying attention. She has ways of finding out if you really know what you claim to know --- called a test.
In this chapter John is addressing some folks who claimed to know things they really didn't. More importantly they were making claims to know God, love God, live in Christ and walk in the light but John knew these were just empty claims. Like a good teacher John rattles off a series of tests to see if they really know what/who they claim to know.
He gives a series of tests to help people determine if their faith is authentic and help them determine whether or not there was validity to the faith claims of others around them. Over the next couple of weeks we will take three of John's tests. We will take the moral, social and doctrinal test.
Today as we look at 1 John 2.3-6 we will be looking at the moral test, the test of obedience. We will discover that obedience is a by-product of true faith.

By this we know that we are in Him: 6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner ...
