Haggai 2

I was not a great student, period. There was not one single subject I excelled and science was no exception. Though I am no physicist I would imagine that science will be with me on this one. It is much easier to push a boulder down a hill than it is push a boulder up a hill.

Down always seems easier than up.

I can get down on the ground easy enough but with balky knees and a great deal of bulk it is much more difficult coming back up. Down is easier than up.

That general observation is true in other areas of life as well, areas beyond the physical. It is easier to tear someone down than it is to build someone up. It is much easier to discourage someone than it is to encourage them.

Down is easier than up and depending on how the down occurs it can also be much more painful!!

Haggai burst onto the scene at a time when God's people were down, discouraged and defeated. They had come from Babylon with a sense of excitement and purpose. There was an enthusiasm that surrounded their return to Jerusalem after a 70 absence. They returned with optimism as they started rebuilding the temple and their people's way of life but the thrill did not last long as opposition mounted and the enormity of the task began to set in.

1. The people pushed the building of the Temple to the sidelines and God to the margins along with it.

2. For 16 years, they focused on their lives, businesses and houses center stage and the work of God went dormant.

So, God sent a preacher/prophet by the name of Haggai to preach to them, to declare God's Word to them and God's Word was effective and the people returned to the task of building the Temple. It did not last long. Remember, down is easier than up.

Haggai unearthed a truth that all ministers have discovered. It is one thing to get God's people to work or back to work and something completely different to keep them on the job - Warren Wiersbe.
