Judges 3:1-6
A young mother was participating in a parenting class at her church. She explained to her 6-year-old daughter, Kayla, that she was taking a course to help her be a better mommy. The next Sunday, after church, Kayla became upset and had a tantrum because she was not getting her way. Both parents tried to calm her. But with tears streaming down her face and in a loud voice, Kayla announced to her mother, ''You told me you were taking a course to make you a better mommy. Well, it's not working!''
We all know what it is to struggle as parents. If you are a parent then you have struggled.
1. You have struggled with your children and the parenting process.
2. Most likely you have just struggled with yourself.
None of us want to fail in life. We especially do not want to fail where it matters most, in the home.
In Judges 3.1-6 we find a whole generation of parents who failed and what I read about happening in the lives of God's chosen people in that day I see happening again in this day and not just in the world but in the Church.
Before we read these heartbreaking verses I want to lay a little groundwork by giving a general over and wide-angled view of the historic backdrop so we can understand the great tragedy we read about these verses.
1. God had chosen this people to be uniquely His, a people of His own possession.
2. God had called them to be a holy nation whose existence, lives and worship reflected His glory to the surrounding nations. They were to be a light in the darkness - to be different on purpose, different for a reason.
3. God throughout their history had protected them, provided for them, preserved them and rescued them. He freed them from 400 years of slavery and sustained them in the wilderness and brought them to the Land of Promise.
4. God desired to bless them in their new land and fill their lives with good things.
