One of the lessons we all learn in life is that it is fairly easy to start something…it is much harder to finish it. Most people have unfinished projects around their home. Projects that were good ideas, needed to be done, would make life more efficient and easier but are still unfinished. Many of us know what it is like to start a new diet and/or exercise plan with lofty goals and a svelte figure in mind only to leave it there…in the mind. Maybe you have stacks of books that you started but never finished before jumping ship to read another. You started a bucket list only to throw the list in the bucket. Starting never seems to be as difficult as finishing.
In life finishing is important. People never make a memorable, lasting and positive imprint on others by the things they start but what they finish. People want to be known for what they accomplished and not what they attempted. The same is true of our faith. While starting a journey of faith is essential it is also extremely important that we follow through and finish.
1. Hebrews 12.1- 2 - Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
2. 1 Corinthians 9.24-27 - 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things.
