In all of our lives we come to the place where we have to think about the future beyond tomorrow and beyond our lives. For all of us there are things we want to pass down and pass on to our children and grandchildren. We may pass down family heirlooms like jewelry, furniture, guns, car/truck or artwork.

There are also lessons that we want them to learn. There is a name we want them to uphold. There are some traditions we would like to see continued. There are some family secrets like grandmother's recipe, dad's secret fishing or hunting technique that we want to continue beyond our lives and so we try to pass that on.

Men and women who start businesses and large corporations want to pass on the way they do things. They want to preserve the best way to make their products or offer their services. They want the brand to continue and so they carefully calculate who they will allow to replace them and lead their company.

We call that passing the torch. It is necessary to preserve what is important and valuable.

As we begin our study in some of the pastoral epistles/letters (1 Timothy; 2 Timothy; Titus) what we are privileged to see is the apostle Paul passing the torch onto the next generation of spiritual leaders and pastors. As he passes it on to them he wants them to begin the process of passing it on to others.

1. 2 Timothy 2.2 - The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also

Throughout Paul's ministry there were many, many that he had a direct hand in bringing to faith in Christ. There were also many that Paul ministered alongside of and poured his life into.

Out of all the people that you find listed as Paul's companions and fellow-workers or laborers only two are called his true 'child in the faith.' Those two men are Timothy and Titus.
