If you have ever watched track and field's relay race then you know the most crucial moments in the race is when one runner, who is ending their leg of the race, passes the baton to the next runner, who is responsible for carrying the baton the next leg of the race. If the baton is dropped or the hand off does not occur then the race is over for that team…they will not win and will not compete.

Last week we started a new series on 1 Timothy entitled passing the torch. 1 Timothy is the first in a series of letters we call the Pastoral Epistles that Paul wrote near the end of his journey. He was handing off the baton of ministry to Timothy and Titus and all who would come after them. He writes this letter as well as 2 Timothy and Titus so they will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth (1 Timothy 3.14-15).

One of the reasons Paul goes to such lengths to hand off the baton of ministry to Timothy and others like him is because he was concerned with not simply promoting the gospel but protecting the message of the Gospel and maintaining sound doctrine.

This is the charge that Paul gives Timothy in the opening of this letter…
1Timothy 1.3-11 - As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, 4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. 5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, 7 wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertion ...
