Pray Expansively (4 of 10)
Series: 1 Timothy
Robert Dawson
1Timothy 2:1-8
Let me begin by asking you a question, How big is your prayer life?' You may sheepishly respond, 'well it's not very big at all. I pray but not as much as I should. I spend some time in prayer but not as much as I would like.' Many of us in here may well respond that way acknowledging that there is definite room for improvement in our prayer life.
In asking that question I am not asking so much about the amount of time or energy you spend in prayer - though it is important. I am asking more about the content of your prayers.
1. How broad are your pursuits in prayer?
2. What is the focus of your prayers?
3. What do your prayers encompass?
4. What are you praying for?
If I were to take our prayers, mine included, and construct a picture of the world, how much of it is touched by our prayers, how big would it be? How diverse and expansive would that world be?
If I were to take our prayers, all of our prayers, collectively and try to construct a mission, purpose and vision statement from them what would that statement say? What would it communicate about our faith, church, our lives and its desires?
1. I daresay if we looked at the world constructed from the scope of our prayers we would say 'it really is a small world after all.'
2. I have a sneaking suspicion the number and variety of people touched by our prayers would be very limited and very much tied to our own backyards. That would even be true for those of you who faithfully pray through the prayer sheet each week.
What I am about to say is based as much on my prayers as much as what I hear others pray and say about their prayer pursuits.
1. The world touched and influenced by our prayers is probably very limited…the focus would often be temporal…the blessings primarily confined to the physical arena.
2. Our prayers focus on a narrow group of people and deal with a lot of health and financial issue ...
