Characteristics of an Effective Minister (8 of 10)
Series: 1 Timothy

1 Timothy 4:1-16
John Stott said the church depends on the truth for its existence; the truth depends on the church for its defense and proclamation.
As the church we are called to preserve God's Word, defending it from error, and we are to proclaim its truth, promoting its message. Although it is the collective responsibility of the church, as gathered believers, to support the Word, that cannot occur unless each individual believer is committed to that duty. (We cannot as a church say we do this collectively if we do not do it individually)
It is a tall task and difficult task which God has assigned us and we are told in this chapter will not always be successful. There are going to be those who oppose the truth in every age and those who walk away from the truth they profess - but obviously have never fully accepted - in every age.
1. Not everyone who hears is going to accept.
2. Not everyone who attacks will be convinced.
3. Not everyone who comes will stay. There will always be people who come and visibly accept the truth of the faith (content of divine revelation and the Gospel but are never transformed by it. They will walk away from it. They are able to walk away from it because they never had it to begin with.
1 Timothy 4.1-5 -But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3 men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; 5 for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.
