A pastor got a phone call. His secretary sent the phone call through. The pastor answered the phone. And the person on the other end of the line said “Is this Pastor Smith?” He said, “It is.” He said, “This is the IRS.” He said, “We need to check on something.” He said, “Do you have a member of your church named Joe Thompson?” He said, “Yes, I do.” He said, “Is he an active member?” He said, “He is.” Said, “Did he give $20,000 last year to the church?” He said, “He will!”

We want to talk tonight about treasure. I've entitled this message The Treasure Test. Now you know on Wednesday night we just take a book and we go through the book. And so in 2nd Corinthians we're marching through verse by verse. And we hit a passage in 2nd Corinthians. It's one of the longest passages in the Bible. It's two chapters, chapter 8 and chapter 9, that deal with the subject of treasure, of giving, of generosity. And Paul was talking to the Corinthians about taking up an offering. He had already talked to them about this. They were taking up an offering in the areas where he had gone in his missionary journeys and established churches, and they were taking up an offering for the church in Jerusalem. And it was the Gentile saints who were giving to help the Jewish saints back at the mother church, at the church in Jerusalem. And the Corinthians weren't doing so well in this matter of giving. And it stands to reason why they weren't doing very well, because they weren't doing very well spiritually. One of the ways that you can tell, that often hits immediately, is when someone is not doing well spiritually, the way you know it is it shows up in the way they handle their finances and what they do with their finances.
