If you have your Bible, please turn to 2nd Corinthians chapter 9. We're studying the Book of 2nd Corinthians, Turning Trials to Triumphs. And tonight, we want to talk about this subject: But I don't Like to Give!

A mother was testing her little girl, 6 years old. She took her to church, and she gave her a dollar and she gave her a quarter. And she said, ''Honey,'' she said, ''when the offering plate comes by,'' she said, ''I want you to choose which one you're going to give to the Lord - the dollar or the quarter. It's up to you. But I want you to pray and then I want you to give.'' And so the mother wasn't sitting with the little girl, so when church was over, they were getting back in the car. And so she said to her little girl, she said, ''Now, honey, which did you choose? Which, which did you give?'' And she said, ''Well, Mother,'' she said, ''I was all set to give the dollar, but then the preacher said that God loves a cheerful giver, and I knew I'd be much more cheerful if I kept the dollar.'' She had trouble. She didn't like to give.

Well, in 2nd Corinthians chapter 8 and chapter 9, two chapters devoted to the subject of giving. Paul was taking up an offering from the Corinthians to bring back to Jerusalem, a sizeable offering. The churches in Macedonia had given sizeably. Even though they were poorer churches, they gave. And the Corinthians had pledged to give, but then there were all these problems that they had with Paul. And they believed the false teachers, saying, ''Well, that guy's just going to take your money and that's all he cares about. He's going to give your money to his Jewish friends so he looks good among his Jewish friends. And you don't need to give to him. And he's a crook, and he's a charlatan,'' and all these things that were coming against the apostle Paul. So the idea of them giving what they had pledged, that really went on h ...
