1 Corinthians 5:1-13
Well, if you have your Bible, please turn to 1st Corinthians chapter 5. We want to look at a passage of Scripture that many people know is in the Bible, 1st Corinthians 5, because they know there's a 4 and there's a 6, but they don't necessarily know what's in 1st Corinthians chapter 5. You know, the word of the day in America, and really in the world, is the word tolerance. We're supposed to be tolerant. And people say, ''Well, that's what is right and that's what's politically correct, to be tolerant.'' The word tolerance means ''a fair objective and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions and practices differ from one's own.'' To be permissive and to have a permissive attitude about people who think differently from you, who do things differently from you, we're to be tolerant. And the reason tolerance is so critical in the world system is because, well, who's to say your truth is better than their truth, or what you believe is better than what someone else believes. And, really, in our world today, everything is tolerated except Christianity. Have you found that to be true? There's tolerance for, ''You want to worship a toadstool? Hey, we need to tolerate that. But if you want to worship the true and living God, well, we're going to have all kinds of difficulty with that.'' And it's such a double standard. But tolerance - that's what everyone wants - tolerance. And listen! You can do whatever you please. You can worship whatever you want to worship. That is your right. God has given you freedom. And there is tolerance, so to speak, when it comes to whatever you want to do. But when it comes to the church of Jesus Christ and it comes to clear-cut sin, God says, ''You need to be intolerant of sin, clear-cut sin, in the life of anyone who is a church member.'' And that's what Paul deals with in 1st Corinthians chapter ...
